Vermont Frost Heaves
Sports Illustrated writer and basketball enthusiast Alex Wolff approached Union Street Media in the fall of 2005 about the birth of the Vermont Frost Heaves. Given a logo, a couple pages of content and half a dozen cool products to sell, USM built & launched a web site for VT's new professional basketball team in less than six weeks.
Objective:
Simply put: Empower the Frost Heaves to embrace the Internet revolution.
As Alex wrote, "The Frost Heaves model is built for both the 21st century and Vermont: part reality series, part high-tech demonstration project, part New England town meeting, part local hero. In other words, a lot more than your typical pro basketball team." In order for the model to succeed, the Frost Heaves needed a good internet partner, and they chose Union Street Media.
Solution:
- Researched various professional basketball sites, and created a visually engaging site that brings the team alive on the web
- Provided the team's front office with the ability to easily update the web site using USM's content management system.
- Gave fans the ability to purchase tickets and merchandise online.
- Enabled the Frost Heaves to send insider dispatches the "Bump in the Road Club" about the birth and life of the team
- Established online voting for fans to determine select team matters.
- Once the team is on the hardwood, USM will coordinate "Webcasts" of Frost Heaves games, so that they can be watched online.
